dc.description.abstract"Systematic, distributional, molt, and breeding data are provided for 723 specimens obtained from the collection of Jacob Unger, mainly in the vicinity of Lichtenau in the Paraguayan chaco. The specimens represent 180 species, including four (Coccyzus erythrophthalmus, Leptasthenura platensis, Pseudocolopteryx acutipennis, and Aimophila strigiceps) reported for the first time from Paraguay based on this collection. The status of the tinamou Nothura 'chacoensis' is discussed, and warrants treatment as a subspecies of N. maculosa. A problematical nighthawk specimen is assigned tentatively to Chordeiles minor panamensis >< neotropicalis, and certainly represents a Middle American or Colombian population. The first western Paraguayan hybrid flickers (Colaptes campestris campestris X campestroides) are described. Data are presented on the features and polymorphism of the woodpecker Dryocopus schulzi. Agriornis microptera microptera winters northward from Patagonia to the Paraguayan chaco and Cochabamba, Bolivia. Anthus chacoensis is noted as a valid species, with a breeding range indicated for the first time (Cordoba, Argentina). The status of many subspecies is discussed"--P. [1].en_US
