Heretofore, Protocaptorhinus has been known only from the early Permian of Texas, whereas Africa has yielded only one other captorhinid, Moradisaurus, from Niger. The Captorhinidae is a monophyletic group (possibly including turtles) with these derived characters: downturned premaxilla, ectopterygoid and tabular absent, medial process of jugal. Protocaptorhinus differs from Romeria in having a shallow median parietal embayment and differs from remaining captorhinids in lacking a retroarticular process"--P.
