A brief taxonomic history of Protolabis, as well as a clarification of the type species, is given along with characters that distinguish Protolabis from both Procamelus and Miolabis. Michenia agatensis, a specialized camelid of smaller size, near the base of the evolutionary radiation of the protolabines, is also described.
