Abstract

The 610 entries in the catalog represent 16th-19th century books and other materials collected by Laufer during the Jacob H. Schiff Chinese Expedition (1901-1904) in order to provide textual sources for the artifacts, the latter collected to document the industrial and social life of the Chinese, including local histories and herbals. All are in Chinese, except for about 70 titles, in Western languages. Most of the collection (some 490 titles) is in the AMNH Library; about 90 titles are in Columbia University's East Asian Library; the remaining consist of miscellaneous items, such as maps. About 20 titles are duplicate entries.
