Abstract

The Australian leg of the Whitney South Sea Expedition began in 1939 and ended in the latter half of 1940. This daily diary format journal represents his notes on weather, habitat, as well as the collection and observation of specimens (primarily birds, some mammals) in 1940. Notes on front and back endpapers provide tire pressure and mileage information for the trip. Locations in northern Australia cited include the Bunya Mountains camp and Birdsville. Macmillan led the Whitney South Sea Expedition from 1935 to 1940 and his wife Joy accompanied him on the expedition, acting as assistant. Lindsay Macmillan was trained by A.J. Marshall, a well-known Australian ornithologist. Before joining the expedition, Macmillan was already well-versed in skinning and collecting bird specimens. He left the Whitney expedition to join the Australian military during World War II.
