Item A phylogenetic approach to the neotropical social wasp genus Leipomeles Möbius, 1856 (Vespidae: Epiponini), with a new identification key (American Museum novitates, no. 4006)(American Museum of Natural History., 2023-12-19) Somavilla, Alexandre; Santos Vieira, Gabriel; Andena, Sergio Ricardo; Noll, Fernando B. (Fernando Barbosa); Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-Leipomeles Möbius, 1856, is a neotropical genus of swarm-founding wasps extending from Costa Rica to the middle of Brazil, with four species described. A combined phylogenetic analysis using female and male morphology, and nest architecture was performed with the program TNT. Leipomeles is supported as monophyletic with the following relationships among species: (L. pusilla + L. albogrisea) + (L. spilogaster + L. dorsata). A new identification key for the genus is also presented.Item Evolution of caste in neotropical swarm-founding wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini). (Fernando Barbosa); Wenzel, John W.; Zucchi, Ronaldo.Reproductive castes are compared in species of swarming wasps representing all currently recognized genera of Epiponini (Polistinae). New morphometric data for nine measures of body parts and ovarian data are presented for 13 species. These are integrated with all similarly conducted available studies, giving a total of 30 species. Analysis reveals several syndromes relating reproductive and nonreproductive individuals: no meaningful distinction, physiological differences only, reproductives larger than nonreproductives with intermediate individuals present, reproductives different in shape from nonreproductives with no intermediates, and reproductives smaller in some aspects than nonreproductives. Distribution of these syndromes among species is consistent with phylogenetic relationships derived from other data. Optimizing these syndromes on the cladogram indicates that the basal condition of Epiponini is a casteless society that is not comparable to the primitively social genus Polistes where dominant queens control reproduction. Castes originate several times in Epiponini, with different results in different lineages. The best documented evolutionary sequence passes from casteless societies, to those with reproductives larger, to those with reproductives differing in shape from nonreproductives, to those with reproductives smaller in some measures. Characters of the male genitalia are combined with morphological characters of the females and nests and used in a phylogenetic analysis. The single cladogram resulting supports monophyly of the genus Pseudopolybia and interrelationships among the species as: P. langi + (P. difficilis + (P. compressa + P. vespiceps)). Previously monotypic, three species are recognized in the genus: A. traili (Cameron), the type species; A. ujhelyii (Ducke), newly raised from synonymy with A. traili, revised status; and A. lutea new species. New distributional records for A. traili and A. ujhelyii are provided from Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. Asteloeca lutea is described from Bolivia, Brazil, and Ecuador, and probably occurs in French Guiana. (James Michael), 1956-A cladistic analysis of the species of the Neotropical social wasp genus Agelaia Lepeletier, 1836, was performed employing female morphology and nest architecture data. Analysis resulted in a single cladogram with length 339, consistency index 0.22, and retention index 0.60, supporting Agelaia as monophyletic. Agelaia bequaerti and A. anceps are raised to specific rank. Male genitalia of A. angulata, A. areata, A. cajennensis, A. centralis, A. flavipennis, A. fulvofasciata, A. multipicta, A. ornata, A. pallipes, A. panamaenis, A. testacea, A. timida, A. vicina, and A. yepocapa are depicted and described, including comparative remarks. A revised identification key is provided.
