dc.description.abstract"Several species of Homalictus and the related genus Urohalictus are markedly larger than other Homalictus. All these large species (all but one of which are new) occur at moderate to high altitudes in New Guinea or nearby islands, regions where other moderate-sized to large Halictinae are almost absent except for Lasioglossum (Parasphecodes?) permetallicum Michener. Five related new species (Homalictus megalochilus, H. torulosus, H. pelorodontus, H. umbonis, and H. sedlaceki) constitute the new subgenus Papualictus. The other large forms of Homalictus seem to have been independently derived, presumably from different small ancestors. Such large species are H. tricolor Michener and the new species H. hirashimai and H. ocellaris. Urohalictus lieftincki, new species, is an extraordinary bee related to Homalictus and Lasioglossum; it is possibly parasitic although one cannot be certain of this in the ansence of females"--P.
