1. All full-text files in the Museum’s Scientific Publications Database are PDF files. To view these files, you need Adobe Reader installed on your computer. You can download Adobe Reader from the Adobe website:
Installation instructions and help are available from Adobe Reader Support.
2. If you are having difficulty opening or viewing a PDF file, be aware that on most computers, Adobe Reader is configured to open a PDF file inside your web browser with a browser plug-in. Sometimes this causes problems with especially large PDF files (and may result in a blank screen or a message indicating the file is damaged). Such problems can be resolved by downloading the file to your computer. To do this, right click on the Open button link. This will pop-up a small window with a list of options. Select the option to save the file, which might be worded “Save target as” or “Save link as” depending on the browser you are using. When you select this option you will be prompted to choose where on your computer to save the file. Once saved, navigate to where you saved it, and click on it to open the file. It should open properly now.
3. Internet Security software such as Norton Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Security may prevent you from opening especially large files. If you have saved a file to your computer, check the size of it. If it is listed as 0 bytes then you need to temporarily disable Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall. Then save the PDF file to your computer again and try opening it.
4. If you are still unable to view PDF files, or if you have other problems to report, please contact dspace@lists.amnh.org. Please provide the following information in your email, if your problem relates to downloading issues::
