Abstract: The Trobriand Islands, located in the Solomon Sea east of Papua New Guinea, are part of an area of the South Pacific rich in tribal art. More than 60 decorated Trobriand war-shields, collected between 1885 and 1914, are now housed in museums and private collections. The front face of each wooden shield is ornamented with a variant of a design that is unique in the region. So far, there has been no agreement as to the meaning of the motif or how it might have originated.
