Abstract: "This monograph brings together for the first time a great deal of previously scattered information about the taxonomy, geographical distribution, general behavior, habitat preferences, nesting behavior, and morphological variation of the 34 genera and 214 species of the Neotropical family Furnariidae. Three subfamilies are retained: the Furnariinae (with five genera and 35 species), the Synallaxinae (with 17 genera and 116 species), and the Philydorinae (with 12 genera and 63 species). For each genus a key to species and detailed descriptions of every species are provided together with their geographical ranges. Data on measurements are summarized in 24 tables, and information on distribution is summarized in 55 maps. A series of 10 color plates illustrates 107 birds representing 33 of the 34 genera"--P. 7.
