Item Revision and cladistic analysis of the nocturnal social wasp genus, Apoica Lepeletier (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae, Epiponini) ; American Museum novitates, no. 3562(New York, NY : American Museum of Natural History, 2007) Pickett, Kurt M.; Wenzel, John W.A revision of the nocturnal social wasp genus, Apoica, is presented. The revision is based on a cladistic analysis of morphological, behavioral, and molecular characters of the nine nominal species. The subgenera Deuterapoica and Apoica are consistent with the phylogenetic results, and are thus retained. A new species, Apoica ellenae, whose phylogenetic position is uncertain, is described. A variant of A. albimacula from Peru is noted. This brings the total number of species in the genus to 10.Item Taxonomic notes on the Vespinae of Yunnan (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). (American Museum novitates, no. 3709)(American Museum of Natural History., 2011) Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-; Dvořák, L. (Libor); Kojima, Jun-ichi, 1955-; Nguyen, Lien T. P.; Perrard, Adrien.; Pickett, Kurt M.In recent years, five new species of Vespinae have been described from Yunnan Province, China. A thorough assessment of these taxa, including study of color differences and compilation of measurements of specimens from six entomological collections, shows that the new taxa are merely variants of existing, nominal species. Thus, all five are synonymized here, as follows: Vespa hekouensis Dong and Wang, and Vespa maguanensis Dong = Vespa analis Fabricius; Vespula yulongensis Dong and Wang = Vespula flaviceps (Smith); Vespula nujiangensis Dong and Wang = Vespula orbata (du Buysson); and Vespula gongshanensis Dong = Vespula rufa (Linnaeus), all new synonymy. The synonymies bring the current number of vespine species recognized worldwide to 67.
