Item Catalog of species in the polistine tribe Ropalidiini (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). American Museum novitates ; no. 3199(New York, N.Y. : American Museum of Natural History, 1997) Kojima, Jun-ichi, 1955-; Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-Item A new Eustenoga[s]ter species (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Stenogastrinae), the first hover wasp known to overwinter on the nest ; American Museum novitates, no. 3534(New York, NY : American Museum of Natural History, 2006) Saito, Fuki.; Nguyen, Lien P. T.; Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-; Kojima, Jun-ichi, 1955-A new species of hover wasp, Eustenogaster nigra Saito and Nguyen, is described based on females and males collected mainly in northern Viet Nam. The wasp is also distributed in mountainous areas of central Viet Nam and the southern part of China. All distribution records are from areas with more-or-less distinct seasons in terms of temperature. The nest is described and compared with those of other Eustenogaster species. A nest collected during early spring in Tam Dao National Park in northern Viet Nam, where there is a more-or-less distinct 'winter', had five males and six virgin females, suggesting that both sexes overwinter on their nest.Item Polybia, paraphyly, and polistine phylogeny. American Museum novitates ; no. 3298(New York, NY : American Museum of Natural History, 2000) Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-; Kojima, Jun-ichi, 1955-; Wenzel, John W.A cladistic analysis of the subgenera of the paper wasp genus Polybia Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Vespidae; Polistinae), and the other genera that construct phragmocyttarus nests, is presented. The results clearly indicate paraphyly of Polybia in terms of the genus Synoecoides Ducke. To remove the paraphyly, Synoecoides is reduced in rank, to a subgenus of Polybia, new synonymy.Item A revision of the genus Asteloeca (Hymenoptera, Vestinae, Polistinae). American Museum novitates ; no. 3427(New York, NY : American Museum of Natural History, 2004) Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-; Nascimento, Fabio Santos do.; Mateus, Sidnei.; Noll, Fernando B. (Fernando Barbosa); Kojima, Jun-ichi, 1955-The polistine genus Asteloeca Raw is revised. Previously monotypic, three species are recognized in the genus: A. traili (Cameron), the type species; A. ujhelyii (Ducke), newly raised from synonymy with A. traili, revised status; and A. lutea new species. New distributional records for A. traili and A. ujhelyii are provided from Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. Asteloeca lutea is described from Bolivia, Brazil, and Ecuador, and probably occurs in French Guiana. The male genitalia of A. traili and A. ujhelyii are illustrated, the larvae compared, and photographs provided of the nests of all three species.Item Taxonomic notes on the Vespinae of Yunnan (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). (American Museum novitates, no. 3709)(American Museum of Natural History., 2011) Carpenter, James M. (James Michael), 1956-; Dvořák, L. (Libor); Kojima, Jun-ichi, 1955-; Nguyen, Lien T. P.; Perrard, Adrien.; Pickett, Kurt M.In recent years, five new species of Vespinae have been described from Yunnan Province, China. A thorough assessment of these taxa, including study of color differences and compilation of measurements of specimens from six entomological collections, shows that the new taxa are merely variants of existing, nominal species. Thus, all five are synonymized here, as follows: Vespa hekouensis Dong and Wang, and Vespa maguanensis Dong = Vespa analis Fabricius; Vespula yulongensis Dong and Wang = Vespula flaviceps (Smith); Vespula nujiangensis Dong and Wang = Vespula orbata (du Buysson); and Vespula gongshanensis Dong = Vespula rufa (Linnaeus), all new synonymy. The synonymies bring the current number of vespine species recognized worldwide to 67.
