Coultas joined the Whitney South Sea Expedition in 1929 and acted as leader from 1930 to 1935. Coultas was a professional collector, who with his friend Walter Eyerdam had initially approached Robert Cushman Murphy, curator of birds at AMNH, about funding for an expedition to East Siberia. Murphy suggested the Whitney South Sea Expedition instead, with both men in the roles of collectors.
